Art of the Trench | a Burberry social project

Burberry today launches Artofthetrench.com, a digital platform with social networking functionality.

Burberry will invite site users to submit their own portraits to feature on the site, creating a body of images reflecting personal trench coat style across the globe. Visitors to the site will be able to favourite and comment on the portraits and share these over Facebook and Twitter.

For the launch of the site Christopher Bailey commissioned a collection of Scott Schuman photographs of people in Burberry trench coats in London, Milan, New York, Paris, Berlin, Sao Paulo and Venice over the last few months.

Scabal platinum and gold new fabric collection

Scabal is always raising the bar when it involves luxury and technical know-how. One of the more carefully guarded secrets is the procedure Scabal uses for incorporating gold into its fabrics. Now the luxury fabric producer has used the very latest techniques to incorporate platinum and 24-carat gold into a new fabric collection called “Treasure Box”.

The first Scabal cloth with gold was “Gold Treasure”, a fabric incorporating 22-carat gold, and was launched in 1999. The continuing demand meant the collection was re-launched in 2005 with new designs. Gold fever has obviously struck Scabal and they are now launching an ultra fine Super 150’s wool from an exceptional bale of Australian merinos wool in which precious metals are incorporated.

Money Laundry Clothing

Money Laundry inspired by and made from US currency, is thought to be the first-ever clothing line made from recycled currency.
Through a patented process, Money Laundry created “Money Thread,” thread recycled from real US currency, and use it in each custom piece of clothing included in the line.

Each design also draws its graphic influences from US currency from the 19th and 20th centuries. The entire line is hand dyed, and custom washed, made in the US from 100% cotton. The Money Thread is then hand stitched.

Ralph Vaessen | the art of handcrafted natural horn eyewear

Dutch designer Ralph Vaessen, studied Public Administration and worked for the Dutch government for over 15 years. Fashion, design, art, architecture and music had been his passion since he was a child.

He started to design eyewear early 2006 because he couldn’t find new frames for himself. An optician told him that he knew a small atelier that could produce a single set of frames if he could make a drawing of the shape he wanted. Ralph Vaessen, who was already looking for a career change, saw an opportunity and he decided to quit his job to start a career as eyewear designer.

The frames are made of natural horn, sometimes in combination with wood or snake leather and handcrafted at a small atelier in Germany. The styles Alex, Aukje, Carel, Claus, Harold, Helen, Isolde, Reinier and Spyker - designed on request by the Dutch sports car manufacture Spyker, are new for the 2010 collection.

'Only horn of domesticated buffalos are or will be used for production. These buffalos are not falling into the category or are under the protection of endangered species and are utilized throughout the world in agriculture in many regions of the world today. These buffalos are not bred or killed for horn. The horn is a residual waste product. The water snake, which leather is used on some frames, is not falling into the category or are under the protection of endangered species.'
